The 02-05 Ram trucks with a bench seat with solid center armrest actually have the storage console inside, but taped shut:
This came in for repair today. Gonna just get another cover and replace it.

Put a copy of the Diary of Anne Frank in there, then re-cover it like OE and give it back to the customer.

Put some coins in there, then close it back up. Slowly drive them insane.

That's....a weird cost cutting procedure...

I would assume it saves so there is only one piece of fabric maybe?

La Sociedad Inmigrantes Pequeñitos , or SIP for short.

Yeah, its just ridiculous that they decided to intentionally hold back a feature from their consumer.

Yet another explanation to why they are so often the trucks involved in that stuff.

Is that gray vinyl code DV? Damn thing was $404.00 when it was available.
Strangely enough if you have cloth (with the box) or leather you can’t buy the assembly. The lid is separate from the base.

We’re just putting our aftermarket cover on it. It is, after all, a 13 year old truck. It looks black. We’re doing our black even though Dark Charcoal is recommended.
*edit*
This thing has no latches in it.

It had to be. It just seems like a waste to produce the console and not use it.

You mean like the 9 speed tranmission that only uses 8 speeds? or the 5 speed that only uses 4?

Or do you mean my mom’s brand new durango that needs a whole new power steering set up?
It’s not even to it’s first oil change.

That’s amazing. I had no idea!
Is this common knowledge among Ram enthusiasts, or are you the first to reveal the big secret?

fish. fish and milk is always the answer. after all it is lent!

The coin holder appears to be missing as well. Dodge ingenuity at its finest though.

I imagine it also helps cut costs by not having to develop two different center consoles. While the cost per piece may be higher than a hollow piece of plastic with foam wrapped around it, the development costs would probably negate any of those savings.

my 96 had the console, odd yours was taped shut.

Just one of those odd cases of paying to use something you already have I guess.

Or the Jeep fuel tank that came in two sizes, but were actually the same size, one with an earlier fuel filling kick off?
